Artist’s Biography

I am a married father of three and a graduate of The Art Institute of Boston, Fine Arts Department, 1973. I have continued to paint since graduation but with the necessity of having to work fulltime as an Elevator Constructor, in the Boston area to support a family and the time involved in raising and educating three children I had little time to pursue much more than painting at home. Now that my kids have gotten older and with the blessings of my wife, I have more time to pursue my artistic endeavours!

I have been visiting Martha’s Vineyard since the 70’s and became a homeowner in Edgartown in 1997. Much of my recent work is inspired by the surroundings of the island. The island of Martha's Vineyard has always been a special place to me and my family, as it is to most of us who live here whether it be full or part-time. We all can relate to its scenic beauty, awe inspiring nature at its best. The cultural diversity, the religious history, the quaintness of its small towns, the friendliness of its people are just a few of the things that draw us back all the time. The artistic communities on such a small island are impressive. The diversity of the arts in themselves whether it be Music, Art, Theater, Spoken word, Literature, Dance, Film or Crafts surround us like a warm coat in winter!! I feel anyone that ever had a paintbrush or crayon in their hand as a child has become an artist on Martha's Vineyard!! It doesn't matter what your style is or whether you are a realist or abstractionist there is an audience for all.

I have been a participant in the All Island Art Show for about ten years with some awards. I was also a participant in the first Featherstone Art Centers- Art In a Day Wet Paint Auction. I have been a member of the Cambridge Art Association and the Newburyport Art Association for years and have been juried into many shows. I have shown in a number of galleries on Marthas Vineyard. Most of the shows have been group shows, Louisa Gould Gallery, Kevin Butler Gallery, and Plein Air shows at The Dragonfly Gallery. Additionally, I have shown my work in local shows in Saugus, Ma. I had a two-man show at the Beebe Mansion in Melrose, Ma. last year 2009 and showed 35 paintings. I had a twenty piece show at The Kravings Cafe in Kingston, Ma. 2008 and a one man show at The Wakefield Co-Operative Bank in 2008. I am putting on a show at The Chilmark Library in May of this year and hope people will stop in and take a look at the paintings!

I don't profess to be a great artist I am just a regular guy who has a painting addiction! I have the urge to paint all the time but sometimes life gets in the way and we have to do the necessary things to keep ourselves afloat. I enjoy what I do on all fronts and I hope you can find something in the works that you might like also.

There are a lot of very good, highly skilled painters on this island and you see them at all the big galleries, but there are a lot of us, who just like to paint and like you to take a look at our work too!!

I look forward to the the opportunity to show a large number of pieces at one time to allow viewers to draw relationships from picture to picture. I feel that there is a strength to my work and that if given the opportunity to see my portfolio others will feel the same. So please take a look at my website www.paintingsbybillbuckley.com. and stayed tuned to VineyardVoice.org. to see many more artists who just want you to "Take a Look At This!!"

I am also looking forward to showing more on island in the future and I am always looking for anyone with a blank wall to drop me a line!
